The UP Alpha Sigma Fraternity
The UP Alpha Sigma Fraternity stands for more than just brotherhood — it is a lifelong commitment to service, excellence, and nation-building. Represented by the Greek letters Alpha (Α) and Sigma (Σ), the name itself carries the meaning "Alay sa Sambayanan", our highest goal and unwavering mission: to dedicate our lives, talents, and leadership for the betterment of the Filipino people.
Founded on October 10, 1962, Alpha Sigma was established as a protest fraternity — a bold response to the destructive and unprincipled behavior associated with many Greek-letter organizations at the time. Created by 24 scholars with a GWA of 1.75 or better, the fraternity’s original vision was to be advocates of scholarship. But Alpha Sigma has always been dynamic and progressive. As the country’s needs evolved, so did our mission.
On October 10, 1964, the second chapter was established by 17 University and College Scholars, marking a shift from academic advocacy to national service. Recognizing the call of the times, Alpha Sigma adopted "Alay sa Sambayanan" as its highest goal — a reflection of its commitment to align personal growth with the collective good. In 1987, the third chapter was founded in UP Manila, further strengthening our reach and relevance.
OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLE
Our decisions, actions, and way of life are anchored on the indivisible trio of Truth, Reason, and Justice — three words taken as one.
Truth means gathering all relevant facts — without bias, without assumptions.
Reason involves analyzing every option, listing pros and cons, and selecting the wisest path.
Justice is about taking action — implementing the best option with integrity and purpose.
Our Four Immediate Goals
Nationalism
We believe that every act, no matter how small, can create ripples of change. Whether it’s picking up litter or voting conscientiously, nationalism means being aware of our impact on society. It must be genuine, inclusive, and intentional — because every Filipino shares the responsibility of nation-building.
Academic Excellence
We make better decisions when we are educated — but we strive for more than being book-smart. An Alpha Sigman is also streetwise and strategic, capable of navigating complex realities with clarity and conviction. But intelligence without principle is empty. True academic excellence is using one’s knowledge for the right reasons — to serve, uplift, and lead with honor.
Leadership
A good leader recognizes the unique strengths and weaknesses of others and helps transform potential into power. Leadership is not domination — it is mentorship, humility, and service. This is embodied in the relationship between masters and neophytes, where growth is passed down through experience and brotherhood.
Physical Development
The body must be as strong as the mind. Our commitment to physical fitness ensures that our members can execute ideas with energy, discipline, and resilience. We believe in moderation, balance, and accountability — even in our personal habits — knowing that a sound body reinforces a sound mind.
